Spring Field Trip: Clam Digging at Futtsu Beach

On April 30th, Thursday, we held our annual spring excursion at Futtsu Clam Digging Beach.

Students from all grade levels were divided into seven buses, with each group consisting of a mix of students from different classes and grades. This arrangement encouraged interaction and cooperation among students beyond their usual classrooms. The group departed from school after the daily morning prayer, and arrived at the site just before 10:00.

Upon arrival, students eagerly explored the beach, equipped with their boots, nets, and hand rakes. They moved from one area to another, carefully digging through the sand in search of clams. Excitement filled the air as many students successfully found large clams, including hamaguri (Japanese hard clams), as well as smaller varieties hidden beneath the surface.

Despite the cloudy weather, the students remained enthusiastic and fully engaged in the activity. The experience allowed them to work with their hands, explore the natural environment, and develop patience and perseverance as they searched for their finds. It also provided a valuable opportunity for experiential learning, as students gained a deeper appreciation for marine life and the coastal ecosystem.

After gathering with their groups and changing into dry, comfortable clothes, the students departed the site at 12:30 and arrived at school just in time to enjoy their own bento/lunch boxes.

This annual spring tradition was not only an enjoyable outing but also a meaningful learning experience. It was a wonderful way to begin the Golden Week, leaving students with joyful memories and a greater connection to nature and one another.
